Russia took over from the Soviet Union in 1992, in time to qualify for the 1994 World Cup in USA. Russia did not make it to the playoff, despite having the topscorer Oleg Salenko on the team. Only in 2002 did Russia again qualify for the World Cup, this time in South Korea and Japan. Again Russia failed to qualify for the playoff stage. Now Russia is hosting the 2018 World Cup, being guaranteed a spot.
