Shin guards

Size them by height, not shoe size. Most brands list a height range for each size in their size charts.

Slip-in guards sit inside a sleeve or sock and weigh very little. Guards with ankle protection add padding over the ankle bones and are common in youth football. Pick a length that covers most of the shinbone without pressing into the ankle when you flex your foot.

Grip socks and sleeves

Grip socks have rubber pads on the sole that stop the foot sliding inside the boot. Club socks have no grip, so many players wear grip socks under cut team socks or sleeves.

Match the sleeve colour to your team's socks. Referees may ask you to change if they differ.
