A discount doesn't help if the studs are wrong for your surface. A common mistake is buying FG boots for weekly training on artificial grass. FG studs grip harder on synthetic turf. That puts extra load on knees and ankles and wears the soleplate down faster.

Which price level makes sense in a sale?

Nike splits its lines into Elite, Pro, Academy and Club. adidas uses Elite, Pro, League and Club. A reduced Elite boot is the top build of its line, with the lightest upper. Pro sits just below it. Club models are built for occasional games and fast-growing feet.

If you play two or three times a week, put the discount toward a higher level. A player who kicks a ball once a month gets little extra from an Elite boot.

How tight should football boots be?

Snug from the first wear. Leave a few millimetres in front of your longest toe, and check that the heel stays down when you push off. Leather uppers, like the one on the adidas Copa Mundial, give a little with wear. Synthetic and knit uppers hold their shape.
