Neutral or stability?

Stability shoes use firmer foam or a guide on the inner side for runners whose feet roll inwards, known as overpronation. Look at an old pair. Heavy wear on the inner edge points that way. If the wear is even, a neutral shoe is the usual choice.

Fit and lifespan

Running shoes need more room than football boots: half to a full thumb's width in front of the longest toe, since feet swell on longer runs.

Many runners replace road shoes after roughly 500 to 800 km. A creased midsole and a smooth outsole are signs the shoe is done.
