A training ball is kicked far more often than a match ball, on harder and rougher surfaces. The priorities are durability, a predictable touch and a size that suits the player.
Select's hand-stitched balls sew the 32 panels together by hand with 630 double stitches and 60 corner stitches, closed with a double knot. Select says this makes them last longer. Its machine-stitched balls use a special sewing machine and fine thread. Select says the result may not reach the same level as hand-stitching, but it is still a solid ball, and it is a sensible choice for casual use and younger players. A well-known example of a hand-stitched Select ball is the Numero 10, which has a PU cover laminated with foam for a softer touch.
Size 5 is the standard for older players, with size 4 and size 3 for younger ones. Lightweight versions are lighter than the standard balls, which makes them easier on younger players. Check the age rules of your club or federation if you are unsure.
