The stadium was completed in 1923, since then updated several times - latest in 2002-2007. Today it fits 90.000 spectators, being the largest stadium in all of England. Placed in the part of London, that is called Wembley - hence the reason for the stadium name. It is the second largest stadium in Europe, but it is the largest stadium in the world that has a fully lockable roof. The trademark look of the stadium is the grand arch that goes above the stadium. It is 7 meters in diameter, 315 meters long and measures 133 meters at the highest point. The arch functions as support for the roof, being the longest non-supported roof engineering. Fun fact: Wembley has 2.618 toilettes, the highest number for any single location in the world.
The stadium is the host of the England national team, and any finals hosted by the FA. Several historical matches has been played here. In 2013 Wembley hosted that years Champions League final, a contest between Dortmund and Bayern Munchen - with Bayern being the winner. Before seeing its latest rebuild, the stadium hosted the 1966 World Cup final. This year England won the World Cup, after beating West Germany 4-2 after extra time. The match is most famous or perhaps infamous for a much debated goal - Geoff Hurst putting England up 3-2.
Besides football games, the stadium is used for many different happenings. In recent years American Football; NFL, has hosted a few games here. But also rugby matches are played here, even boxing takes place here: in 2014 Carl Froch and George Groves battled each other, with 80.000 spectators. Even concerts from Eminem, Muse and Green Day.
