Running apparel is built to move sweat away from the skin, layer easily and keep you visible in low light. Tops, bottoms and outer layers work together, so you can dress for a warm summer evening or a frosty morning with the same few pieces. Below, you will find how to layer and what the brands' fabric names mean.Read more

Three layers, every season

The base layer sits next to your skin. A sweat-wicking T-shirt or long-sleeve top does this job, and a close fit helps the fabric work.

The mid layer adds warmth on cold days. Long sleeves, half-zips and tops with a grid fleece inside belong here.

The outer layer protects. A jacket blocks wind and, with a water-repellent finish, light rain. A vest keeps the core warm and leaves the arms free.

For the legs, shorts cover the warm months, tights fit close when it gets colder, and trousers give a looser option for cool runs.

Be seen

Many running lines add reflective details, such as the reflective bars on Nike's Miler pieces and the reflective logos on adidas adi365. On dark runs, wear at least one reflective piece on your upper body and one lower down.
