Nike Premier Black/White - Old school boot with modern performance

Reading time: 3 min

Nike have more rabbits in the hat, after launching the flamboyant Hypervenom and this time they go back to the more retro look with the new Nike Premier. It is a football boot with a truly classic and timeless design, and with a performance that can easily give the boot a spot in the modern boot market. A proper leather boot with black and white nuances.

Nike Premier is the latest addition to the ever-growing family, but it is surely a boot that looks like it could have been on sale for ages. It very much has a timeless design with a black upper and only a few white details as the iconic Swoosh both on the medial and lateral side of the boot. But don't let yourself get fooled by the somewhat old-fashioned design, this surely is a boot with the level to make it on the modern market.

The upper is made of a combination of kangaroo leather, as well as, extremely soft and supple goat leather, which we have also seen Nike using for their street shoe, the Lunargato II. It provides an incredible fit right out of the box and after a short breaking-in period, the leather will adapt to your foot, which only adds to the comfort. In addition, the soft leather delivers a very natural touch on the ball, something that a lot of people will applaud.

Visually, Nike have been inspired by some of the iconic landmark boots throughout time. This includes, among others, the Nike Tiempo Premier from 1994, which was worn by no less than 10 players in the World Cup final same year. Moreover, inspiration has been taken from “The Nike” from 1971, which was the first boot ever with the now well-known Swoosh.

Nike's Vice President for football footwear goes by the name of Phil McCartney, and is the man behind the Nike Premier. He explained to the design team, that they were going to deliver a boot with a classic look, but with performance and qualifications to be able to make it on the modern market.

"When we first showed our players the Nike Premier they said to us: 'That looks like a classic from the archive.' When they put it on though, they realized it's far from old-fashioned,"

How do you best describe the Nike Premier? We will let Phil McCartney answer that one:

"We wanted the Premier to have a simple visual design but for it to be bold and, stylistically, carry a lot of Nike Football DNA. There are players out there who want a beautiful black leather boot that delivers a great fit and a ultra-soft touch on the ball. The Premier is for those players."

Nike Premier is built on the same last as they used for the Hypervenom, which is their most anatomically correct last to this day. It keeps your foot close to the ground and the ball for a better touch. The natural flex from the outsole provides a stable midfoot and a springy forfoot to improve your acceleration. The stud system is also very classic with conical studs and a few blades, which provide a good pitch grip on various surfaces.

The Nike Premier will the same football boot segment as the Adidas Copa Mundial and the Puma King Top DI. How do you think it will perform? What do you think of the boot? Feel free to share your comment in the box below and join the debate on Twitter and Facebook.
