After seeing the iconic diamond logo disappear from more and more clubs around England, Umbro are now back at the top of English football. Yesterday they announced a brand new deal with Everton, which will see Umbro providing shirts for the Merseyside outfit for the next five seasons.

The next five years Everton will have their shirts made by the English brand, who will reveal the first of Everton’s new shirts at the start of the 2014/15 season. It is however far from the first time that the Evertonians have their shirts produces by Umbro, in fact the blue-half of Liverpool have been sponsored by Umbro 3 times before.

First time was between 1974 and 1983 and then from 1986-2000. Afterwards Everton had a brief spell in Puma for 4 years before returning to good old Umbro once more in 2004-2009. Now the English brand – who are ironically from Manchester – back with a deal lasting until 2019.

The change marks the return of Umbro to the top of English football as a kit supplier, after the brand was bought and then sold by Nike, who ended up taking over several of their sponsorships like Manchester City. Now Umbro are back on their own, with the Everton-deal – who will be the only clubs sponsored by Umbro in the Premier League.

Roberto Martinez, Everton Manager, said: “Everyone at the Club is not only delighted, but excited, to be back wearing the Umbro diamond next season.”

And it is not just in the Everton camp that the deal has been welcomed. Paul Nugent from Umbro said the following: “Everton fans can expect smart, modern and importantly, unique kits next season.”

You usually say third times a charm, but maybe this time it will take four times to end up with a long and loving relationship between Everton and Umbro.
