On this day in 2010, FIFA unveiled the two next World Cup host nations, after Brazil 2014. Lots of people were pretty bemused by the announcement of Russia 2018, but that soon turned to utter shock, when Qatar won their bid for the 2022 tournament.

What would it actually mean? In Qatar the temperatures often reach 40 degrees in the summer. How will it even be humanly possible to play in these conditions? Qatar suggested building five climate controlled stadiums, which would keep the heat at bay, but that really didn’t consider that the relatively small country would be host to tons of foreigners outside the stadium, who wouldn’t be acclimatised to the ludacris conditions. Since then it has been decided, under equally controversial circumstances, that the 2022 World Cup will be held in November/December.

Qatar beat, let’s be honest here, far more suitable nations like the USA, Australia and Japan, so the allegations of corruption didn’t really lighten up after the 2nd of December 2010. Nonetheless, the decision stands: Qatar will host the World Cup in seven years and it will be held in the winter.

I don’t really know what to think about the whole situation. In a way I’m actually looking forward to a winter World Cup, but on the other hand World Cups are something I instantly associate with summer and I can hardly imagine anything else. Where do you stand on the whole thing?
