Indoor shoes for football

When football moves indoors, your shoes need to follow. Indoor football shoes are made for hard, flat courts and have a flat outsole instead of the studs you'll find on regular football boots. Many models come with a non-marking rubber outsole that gives you grip without leaving marks on the court.

A pair of regular trainers can do a lot, but they're not built with football in mind. With proper indoor shoes, you get footwear made for the quick stops, turns and changes of direction that come with the game, while the upper is designed with playing and controlling the ball in mind.

IC and IN - what do they mean?

If you see IC or IN in the name of a pair of football shoes, you're looking at a model made for indoor play. IC stands for Indoor Court, while IN is also used for shoes designed for hard indoor surfaces. Which abbreviation you see depends on the brand and model.

If you're playing on natural grass, artificial grass or turf instead, you'll need a different type of outsole. Always check which surface the shoe is designed for before choosing your pair.

Which indoor shoes should I choose?

Fit is a good place to start. Your shoes should feel secure when you accelerate, stop and turn, while still staying comfortable when you play. From there, think about what you want from the shoe. Some indoor models put more focus on cushioning and comfort on hard courts, while others have a more flexible, low-profile feel that keeps you closer to the surface.

The upper can make a difference too. Leather, suede and synthetic uppers all give a slightly different fit and feel, so there isn't one construction that's right for everyone. Think about what feels comfortable on your foot and how you like the shoe to feel when you're on the ball.

If you're after a classic indoor shoe, models like the adidas Spezial and Joma Top Flex are good places to look. The Spezial brings that unmistakable old-school indoor look with its suede upper, while the Top Flex is all about a soft, flexible feel. Prefer something closer to today's football boots? Indoor versions of familiar models such as the Nike Mercurial and adidas F50 bring a more modern football boot feel to the court.
